Occlusion and temporomandibular disorders

During years the controversy has gone with the occlusion and temporomandibular disorders (TMD). This has led to confusion in basic questions of diagnosis and formulate occlusal plans, and over the relationship between TMD, occlusion, bruxism and orthodontics. The current literature does not allow to get strong scientific evidences over the mentioned questions, nevertheless it allows a point of view more biological of the occlusion and to elucidate a minor role of the occlusion as etiologic factor of TMD, the suitability of reversible therapies before to irreversible in TMD patients and the probable absence the relationship between orthodontics and TMD.  (Rev Esp Ortod. 2010;40(1):021-029)
