The purpose of this study was to introduce a new system of assessing dental arch relationships in patients with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate (CBCLP): the Bauru Yardstick. 144 dental models of patients with CBCLP in late deciduous, mixed or early permanent dentition were classified from 1 to 5, according to the severity of the malocclusion and its difficulty to be corrected.
Six orthodontists experienced in treating patients with cleft employed the Bauru Yardstick to independently categorize the 144 models on 2 separated occasions. The evaluation of the dental models using the Bauru Yardstick demonstrated high reliability and reproducibility intra and interexaminer.
