Looking for stability, many orthodontists have indicated the 3 x 3 fixed retainer for a long period of time. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the periodontal condition of the lower anterior area in patients with bonded retainer for at least 4 years. Pictures and periapical radiographs were tooken from 21 orthodontic patients treated with a retainer bonded in the lower anterior areas and evaluated by orthodontists and periodontists. The results show that 38,9% of patients had bacterial plaque, 64,3% had calculus, 32,5% showed alteration of gingival color, 65,1% alteration of gingival margin and 38,1% had bone loss. In 95,2% of the patients it was not found crownding in this area. The conclusion was that patients with fixed retainer showd be part of a specific plaque control and periodontal treatment to combine stability and periodontal health.  (Rev Esp Ortod. 2006;36(1):007-013)
