Effect on sliding mechanics of a new low friction elastomeric ligature: a comparative in vitro study

The aim of this study was to introduce a new design of elastomeric ligature (low friction elastomeric ligature - LFEL), that allows to slide between bracket and arch with less friction and to compare his properties, in an in vitro study, with conventional elastomeric ligatures and metallic ligatures. An MTS Bionix essay machine was used to determine the dinamic friction forces delivered by the different kinds of ligatures and the different kinds of configurations on the bracket. The results showed that friction was much lower when the low friction elastomeric ligature were used in comparison with the other ligatures. The use of LFEL seems to be indicated in sliding mechanics.  (Rev Esp Ortod. 2001;31(4):281-288)
