The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate if the hyoid position may be taken as an indicator of the lingual position, and to analyze if the hyoid position forward or backward coincide with the cephalometric findings seen in the alterations of the lingual posture. 286 teleradiographies where studied, and the distance hyoid-gnathion was used to localize the hyoid on the horizontal plane. When comparing the hyoid-gnathion distance by means of different cephalometric measurements, the results of this research show that this parameter is not a genuine indicator of lingual performance.  (Rev Esp Ortod. 2000;30(2):125-131)

Key words:
Hyoid. Facial pattern. Position of lower incisor.
