Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems dedicated for craniofacial imaging are now available from several manufacturers. CBCT potentially provides opportunities for 3D cephalometrics in orthodontic assessment of bony landmarks and airbounded surfaces such as the skin of the face. The purpose of this paper is to trace the history origins of CBCT and its eventual commercialization for maxillofacial imaging.  (Rev Esp Ortod. 2008;38(4):269-275)
