The development of orthodontics as a scientific and clinical field in the second half of the past century is considered with an effort to identify which research in our field has a permanent influence on the perception of orthodontics. The unique work of Arne Björk was selected because it changed the orthodontic scenery forever. Björk’s longitudinal growth studies continue to play a fundamental role in new developments in craniofacial growth research. These new developments also indicate that fundamental changes in the way traditional cephalometrics had its role in orthodontics are becoming in sight.
