Symmetry is an important factor in esthetics and a key factor in the ideal orthodontic outcome. To evaluate symmetry a
midsaggital reference plane needs to be selected. The selection of this plane may be difficult in severe asymmetric faces making
the diagnosis and treatment planning complicated. The selection of a midsaggital plane in patients with less severe asymmetries
is often easier. A distinction between the facial, skeletal, apical base, and dental midlines is reviewed. Treatment mechanics for
the solution of different dental midline discrepancies is discussed.
