Cone beam CT in orthodontic and periodontal therapy

Multidisciplinary cases involving periodontal procedures in patients receiving orthodontic care highlight the usefulness of cone beam CT technology in everyday clinical practice. There are three classic patient centered intersection points between orthodontics and periodontics: developmental abnormalities such as impacted teeth or limited zones of keratinized tissue, periodontitis, and compromised anchorage. One important factor in delivery of appropriate orthodontic treatment is managing periodontal problems which may interfere with orthodontic treatment and its outcomes. The key factor in managing such obstacles is identifying the periodontal problem at hand. CBCT is useful for orthodontists to identify these obstacles.  (Rev Esp Ortod. 2009;38(4):331-7)
